Most of us have great difficulty fully comprehending abject poverty and it's associated hardships. This adaptation of Frank McCourt's memoirs gives us a hard look at one boy's journey from empty hopes and life-suppressing squalor to dreams of a return to America, where he would receive a life-changing education.
Stories of immigrants escaping harsh conditions to start new lives elsewhere are not new, but this one puts more focus on the beginnings and less on the results. I wouldn't call this a feel-good movie, but it certainly induces feelings that will ultimately reward you.
