A true jewel in the sci-fi field and a great work of storytelling. While a work of art on its own, this is the setup for what eventually becomes an expansive universe of movies and series. The movie itself takes the age-old idea of alien intervention on Earth's history and gives it a rationale that is both engrossing and fun! The visual effects are great, from the energy weapons to the retractable armor. The sets and costumes are just amazing. The only downside to this is some of the military type situations and ideas are a bit overplayed, but easily overlooked.
