Feels like something at the crossroads of classic gothic horror and at the birth of Italy’s later, blood-soaked horror style. Lust of the Vampire is inconsistent in pacing, but it pulses with a gloomy energy that's hard not to appreciate.
There's pure gothic pulp- mysterious murders, crumbling castles, experiments with immortality. While the vampire elements are surprisingly minimal, the twisted science angle gives it a weird, almost Frankenstein-esque vibe.
It’s creaky by today’s standards, but Lust of the Vampire earns its place as a landmark: Italy’s first sound-era horror film with help from a young Mario Bava, and a brooding prototype for the nightmares that would follow.
