Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 42-minute tragicomic musical in three acts, each released separately. It tells the story of Dr. Horrible, an aspiring supervillain, Captain Hammer, his superhero nemesis, and Penny, their mutual love interest. The movie was written by writer/director Joss Whedon, his brothers Zack Whedon and Jed Whedon, and Jed's then fiancée, actress Maurissa Tancharoen. The writing team penned the musical during the WGA strike. The idea was to create something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done, in a way that would circumvent the issues that were being protested during the strike.
Before Disney+ tried to make musicals cool again, this lil’ fever dream slid in with a freeze ray and a blog post—and stole my entire heart. 💻🎶💔 Yes, Joss Whedon is problematic, but this cast? STACKED. Neil Patrick Harris? Adorkable, tragic perfection. Nathan Fillion? The himboiest himbo to ever flex and smolder. Felicia Day? The soft-voiced soul of this whole thing. And yes—Moist, the villain sidekick whose power is literally being damp. Played by Simon Helberg (Big Bang Theory fans, rise up). The music? BANGER after BANGER. Earworms with emotional payloads. I’ve 100% whispered “With my freeze ray I will stop the world” to myself like a lovesick supervillain in traffic 😩❄️💥 It’s funny. It’s clever. It’s deeply sad in a way you don’t expect until it’s too late. And the lines? ICONIC: “You know you got something special when Bad Horse wants you on the Evil League of Evil.” “He rides across the nation, the thoroughbred of sin.” “He’ll make you his mayor.” 🐴👀 A cult classic that deserved better distribution, a sequel, and probably therapy. If you like musicals, satire, or Neil Patrick Harris crying in goggles—this is for you. 4 stars for being nearly perfect but tragically short. 💔🎭
