A group of survivors of the rage virus live on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors.
Whoa buddy is this going to be a divisive one. The most divisive since maybe Halloween Ends. You're best going in with a very open mind and minimal expectations forgetting the previous films cause I promise you'll be leaving with a very different experience. Let's discuss the horror elements- Boyle gives us different types of rage infecteds. The variety is pretty damn sweet. Not only that but unique situations too like a "zombie" birth and the hordes conform as a loose society. Loved the temple-like bone structures. Long term survival is the focus. We're past despair, hope, and on to acceptance of the world. There's the slightest dash of folk horror which would had been sick if explored deeper. Visually the striking contrast of rotting flesh and gore among nature claiming the ground again is magnificent. Endless fields of blooming flowers with rotting infected beings chasing their victims. This is anything but a standard "zombie" survival as marketed. There's an attempt to strike human emotion and the beauty in death. I appreciate the uniqueness even if it wasn't what I was looking for. And then that final scene is a head scratcher. I suppose that'll be answered in the next chapter. This shit is going to turn into Doomsday, calling it now.
