The narrative follows J. Robert Oppenheimer, a key figure behind the atomic bomb's creation, a pivotal factor in concluding World War 2. From his time in academia to the aftermath of the war, the story unfolds, depicting how his renown entangled him in complex political situations.
it’s an impressive piece of filmmaking. Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography wows in the format for sure. The IMAX sequences are gorgeous. MVP for me might be Ludwig Göransson’s propulsive score that maintains the energy of the film even as we’re jumping back and forth between various time periods. Robert Downey Jr. is incredible here. Cillian Murphy is equally impressive as Oppenheimer himself and the film is at it’s best when it’s really exploring Oppenheimer’s struggle with the morality of creating a weapon of mass destruction, perfectly accentuated in the closing moment of the film. It’s also a long and challenging film to follow at times with so many characters, and so many jumps to varying timelines in the story. It still always feels meticulously crafted though, and I think upon rewatch it will be much easier to follow. The entire cast is stellar. I question why Florence Pugh needed to be naked in every scene....but I also dare not complain. It’s absolutely one of the must-see films of the year. I’m kind of torn on the format choice. I’m certainly grateful I got to see it in IMAX 70mm and it truly looks stunning.
