Ingrid Thorburn is an unhinged social media stalker with a history of confusing "likes" for meaningful relationships. Taylor Sloane is an Instagram-famous "influencer" whose perfectly curated, boho-chic lifestyle becomes Ingrid's latest obsession. When Ingrid moves to LA and manages to insinuate herself into the social media star's life, their relationship quickly goes from #BFF to #WTF.
I don’t know how I feel about that ending, but this darkly funny and acerbic commentary on social media obsessed culture is a captivating watch. Aubrey Plaza seems to be intent on stressing me out with all of her roles. Here she goes full instagram stalker in an attempt to get Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) to simply “like” her. Plaza and Olsen both play their roles convincingly well.  It’s a sad portrayal of the lengths some will go to in order to achieve the mere acceptance of others—and an even greater sadness when you realize that those they’re seeking acceptance from are equally just as  desperate. Some of the films speaks to the potential that Ingrid may not be mentally healthy. There’s possible trauma with her mother and obviously that ending doesn’t exactly depict a picture of mental stability, but it doesn’t necessarily adequately explore the mental health issues adequately. Are her stalker tendencies a result of her social media obsession? Vice versa?  I think the film could have handled this aspect with a bit better. Still, I really liked seeing Plaza and Olsen together.
