The Last of Us

The Last of Us
20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The casting choices were disappointing to say the least. Joel's character should be portrayed as emotionally closed off, haunted by the grief and guilt of losing his daughter, which has made him cold and seemingly heartless. Ellie, on the other hand, should embody a lovable personality with an innocent, childlike charm that remains untainted by the harshness of the world, serving as a reflection of Joel’s daughter. This dynamic is where their connection should shine.
However, Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie seems limited, oscillating between expressions of anger and silliness, lacking the depth needed for the role. While Pedro Pascal is an adequate choice for Joel, there were arguably more fitting candidates. Additionally, the inclusion of certain woke elements feels forced, detracting from the core story. Ultimately, it feels like the potential of this show was undermined by casting decisions and creative direction.
