Unnecessary, convoluted, nonsensical mess.
Despite being wholly unnecessary – the original trilogy ended 18 years earlier and ended badly – this film initially had some potential. The Matrix-within-the Matrix concept was interesting. Most of all it seemed like Lana Wachowski was going back to what made the original Matrix so brilliant and the next two films at best okay: clever, original concept and engaging plot development rather than mindless action scenes.
So much for that.
The plot quickly becomes too convoluted for its own good and soon doesn’t make any sense. The film also reverts back to what made Revolutions so weak – action scenes for the sake of action scenes, all so perfectly choreographed and repetitive they become very tedious, very quickly.
Dialogue is laughable at times, to the point that you can sense the actors losing interest in their lines! On that note Keanu Reeves seems to be phoning it in and the remaining cast aren’t much better.
Avoid.
