A private eye escapes his past to run a gas station in a small town, but his past catches up with him. Now he must return to the big city world of danger, corruption, double crosses, and duplicitous dames.

The first half of the movie shows us the past, that the hero (Robert Mitchum) is running from. Those past ghosts are the fem-fatal (Jane Greer) and gambler (Kirk Douglas). The second half is the three of them dancing with plots and counter plots, rushing to a final conclusion. It's works and well worth watching.
