Personally I found Casino Royal a great direction for Bond; taking the character in a more serious direction, a return to the character of the source material. But many felt this Bond reboot lacking a certain something, and that something is trash.
This iteration of the franchise has plenty of it, with it's kindergarden plot and comical over the top, hackneyed villian with literal arched eyebrows and unabashed Chinese racism, it's beautiful, embarresing, cheap 90's trash.
Bond's terrible corny one liners, gizmos and gadgets absolutely shine in this movie, and both are dated as all hell. (I'm pretty sure I could download an app to control my car on my phone right now, most probably.)
The forgettable plot is irremdeemably bad, the set pieces are cartoonish, predictable and have aged woefully. I was particularly fond of the scene where the chinese firework truck exploded, and I'm fairly sure a lot of the industrial set is just spray painted plastic.
This is such a collosal let down after the superb and introspective Golden Eye. Whilst it's predecessor questioned the cynical motives of the nation state, and the terrible cost to it's pawn agents who devoted their lives to it's service, this film says "Yeah, but what if everything exploded".
Whilst I have seen episodes of Thunderbirds with more dramatic tension and credability, this film made me laugh out loud several times, and at the end of the day, temporarily losing my vision from the blood rushing to my head is the most fun you can have in this terrible year of our lord, two thousand and twenty five AD.
And to think people say the 90's were a golden age. Bond always beats the odds.
