Cliff, a traveling salesman drowning under the weight of providing for his family and the myth of the American dream, finds himself on a dangerous path after a chance encounter with Ricky, a colleague from a dark past.
Small town crime thriller finds Cliff (Scoot McNairy) working as a traveling salesman along the I-90 corridor in Montana. When he loses his job because of a presumed connection to an embezzlement scandal at a previous employer, he‘s stuck with no income and no prospects. After a chance encounter with an old friend, Ricky (Kit Harrington), and desperate to still provide for his family, he reluctantly agrees to work for Ricky’s crime boss, running drugs and guns across the state.
I found this to be very engaging even though it’s sluggish pace might turn some folks off. McNairy is perfectly cast as Cliff and carries the bulk of the film. Harington’s Ricky is a bit one dimensional and I thought it was fairly obvious how his character‘s story would play out…and it did. That’s more of a criticism of the script than it is Harington’s performance, though. And while it reminded me a bit of the Hell or High Water, it’s not nearly as thematically rich as that film. It is a solidly entertaining watch. Seen at Tribeca Film Fest 2023 and also features Stephen Dorff, Josh Lucas and Ethan Suplee.
