This wasn't made for Star Trek fans, that much is certain. Watching ten minutes of this before mercifully shutting it off makes me question whether I have more patience than I thought, or if I'm just incredibly gullible. I desperately waited for it to improve, but it only spiraled downwards. One eccentric character can add depth to a story, but a cast entirely composed of them is simply distracting and overwhelming. Many critics have echoed the sentiment that the show felt like a cheap imitation of other, better spy thrillers, lacking the nuance and philosophical depth that Star Trek is known for. The writing was particularly lambasted, described as "cliched," "predictable," and "insulting to the intelligence of the audience." Section 31 had the potential to be a compelling exploration of the darker side of the Federation, but it ultimately squandered that opportunity with its shallow characters, generic plotlines, and a complete disregard for the core values that have always defined Star Trek.
