Saw this one on Dutch TV in the early '80s.
It was Star Wars on a budget, but with heart, ambition and Lorne Greene in space.
After the Twelve Colonies are wiped out by the Cylons, Commander Adama leads a ragtag fleet of survivors across the stars in search of Earth.
Every episode was survival, sabotage and space dogfights, with laser blasts, disco helmets and Dirk Benedict as Starbuck, the cigar chomping rogue.
The effects were recycled, the pacing was uneven and the storytelling could be clunky, but it had charm.
It felt big, even when the budget didn’t. Too bad they went the way they did in Galactica 1980. The tone shifted, the cast changed and the magic fizzled.
I saw it on TV, loved it for what it was and still smile when I hear the theme music.
