Le Havre
In the French harbor city of Le Havre, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the tireless support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials pursuing the boy for deportation.

A pleasant surprise. I wasn’t familiar with Aki Kaurismäki before watching this, and his storytelling approach is quite unique. The actors avoid overplaying the drama, yet they maintain a certain distance from both reality and their own characters. It’s a simple, understated story about human solidarity and dignity in a world marked by hardship and desperation.
