The Hammer of God

The Chinese Boxer
A martial artist seeks revenge after his master and his entire Kwoon are wiped out by Japanese Karate masters who're in cahoots with a vile martial artist seeking to control the area by opening casinos and trapping people in debt.

Jimmy Wang Yu's One-Armed Boxer is one of my favorite martial arts films- before its inception here's The Chinese Boxer. Both are pretty similar in style. In fact the entire first half of this film I was having deja vu like I'd already seen this before. Five Fingers of Death, The Boxer from Shantung, Fist of Fury, and One-Armed Boxer were coming to my mind.
The best martial arts films have blood and Yu doesn't disappoint as The Chinese Boxer is chalked full of the red stuff! Eyes are gouged, decapitations, sword slicing, every punch to the head has the victim spitting blood. Lo Lieh always lays down a merciless villain. It's always a treat to see him onscreen.
For the most part it moves quick although somewhere in the middle it started to lose me on some kind of casino subplot. After that the last thirty minutes is nothing but our hero boxer kicking everyone's ass and it's gnarly.
