When the old owner of a dilapidated used car lot dies due to foul play, his young and ambitious hot-shot salesman and colleagues vow to save the property from falling into the hands of the owner's treacherous brother and used-car rival.
Early Robert Zemeckis romp before he got all serious and sappy. Used Cars is a raucous, irreverent comedy that gleefully skewers the world of sleazy car salesmen. I absolutely adore car films and feel like I've seen everything worthwhile in the genre so this was an incredible surprise. The film is a chaotic ride filled with outrageous schemes and sharp satire. Simple plot revolving around efforts to save a struggling dealership from a ruthless competitor. What follows is a series of absurd antics, including fake commercials, wild stunts, and over the top con jobs. The first commercial scene during the football game had me ROARING. That shit was just great with that model. The mix of slapstick, verbal sparring, and escalating absurdity make this far from anything realistic but can be compared to greats like Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit. Used Cars is a satirical time capsule of 80's Americana, capturing the hustle and audacity of an era back when these types of films were actually fun.
