J.J. Abrams doing Early Spielbergian sci-fi and the result is outstanding. (It probably helps when Spielberg himself is a producer.) Watched this with my kids and they all really enjoyed it. Rare that they all agree on something. Having bike riding adolescent protagonist’s but dealing with very grown up problems, taps into something almost universally appealing. (E.T., IT, Stranger Things. I’ve successfully gotten my kids to watch all of the above except for IT. The trailers terrified them, but I’m gonna keep working on it.)
I really love just about everything in this movie. Love the friends dynamic and that they just mess around making films. The scenes of them blocking the scenes, rehearsing and then leading into the train crash is an incredible sequence. Loved the how Elle Fannings character is introduced into the group. The slow reveal of the monster is extremely well paced, gradually building to the climax. For real though, J.J., tone it down on the lens flare. I really don’t get the appeal of it. Really enjoyable watch with the kids and better than I remember it.
