Simin is an Iranian woman on a journey to discover what it means to be a free American. She works for the Census Bureau which, in an effort to control its citizens, has begun a program to record their dreams. Unaware of this devious plot, Simin is torn between her compassion for those whose dreams she is recording and a truth she must find within.
Land of Dreams has a lot of ideas it’s exploring from the immigrant experience and the American dream to pervasive surveillance, but it all comes together a bit too enigmatically. Sheila Vand is rather captivating to watch, but the absurdist (at least I think it’s absurdist) plot left me struggling to connect with almost any of the story here. It does feature a kind of loony performance (cameo) from Isabella Rosselini and Anna Gunn has some fun in dual performances, but there really isn’t much else I could recommend.
