This is another movie I show to my grade 7 classes, this time to introduce them to essay structure via the topic of mystery writing. Every year I think my kids will be turned off by the obvious dating of the movie, or some of the more cheesier aspects, but no, by the time that Harry gets close to figuring it all out, and thinking that she may have lost her beloved Tucker, the class is absolutely riveted to the story, the characters and the screen! If you ever lament the speed at which your kids are growing, show them this movie and watch their faces at Tucker's heroic finale action set peice! The kids faces brings them right back to the wide-eyed wonder of when they were 5 or 6 years old! It certainly helps that the director uses the cuteness of Tucker and Mrs. Murphy to full effect, as it's impossible not to root for them throughout as they help/hinder Harry as she tries to negotiate the feelings she has for her new neighbour. Ricki Lake is also brilliant, really giving it her all in the role.
