A chaotic plunge into crime- equal parts exploitation, black comedy, and grotesque nightmare. Even though it predates Rob Zombie material it feels like one of his outputs with a sprinkle of Tarantino. A massive compliment.
The performances are what keep it alive. Rosie Perez is unpredictable, a powder keg, while Javier Bardem goes full deranged outlaw, pushing further than his performance in No Country for Old Men. And then out of nowhere you've got freaking Screamin' Jay Hawkins alongside the madness.
The tone is abrasive and the violence is excessive. It wears just slightly as it goes on, no really warranting the run time. Doesn't matter though as the chaos rarely let's up.
