The Beach

The Beach
Garland's novel centers on a young nicotine-addicted traveler named Richard, an avid pop-culture buff with a particular love for video games and Vietnam War movies. While at a hotel in Bangkok, he finds a map left by his strange, whacked-out neighbor, who just committed suicide. The map supposedly leads to a legendary island paradise where some other wayward souls have settled.

The Beach seems to divide opinion. It had such bad reviews on first release which I never could understand. DiCaprio is superb as Richard, and compliments the script very well with romance, action and psycho turns that were as disturbing as they were scary. The supporting cast are very good, and Danny Boyle`s direction was spot on. You would think by the title the plot would not be interesting, but the film is so much more. It`s a tale of intrigue, romance, jealousy and action, which is perfectly surrounded by the most beautiful environment. Some good extras on the dvd including an audio commentary by Danny Boyle. I have not read the book so please take this into account!
