Back to Black

Back to Black
The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.

Marisa Abela is genuinely great. Her vocal work is seriously impressive in her performance of an iconic voice. For that reason, I really wanted to like this film more. Somehow this is just the biggest nothing-burger of a film story-wise. There’s just nothing interesting covered and it’s interspersed with poorly produced montages and musical numbers. Again, Abela’s performances of the songs are admirable, but they’re shot in the most bland fashion. Watch the A24 doc instead.
