“The Sea Chase” casts John Wayne against type as a German sea captain evading the British navy at the dawn of World War II. It’s a maritime cat-and-mouse thriller with shades of romance and moral tension. Lana Turner adds glamour as the love interest, but the chemistry feels forced, and her role lacks emotional weight. The film juggles war, ethics, and romance without fully delivering on any, resulting in a scattered tone. Still, it’s a fascinating detour for Wayne, flawed, yes, but admirably ambitious and worth a look for fans interested in a different side of his screen persona.
