In 1787, British ship Bounty leaves Portsmouth to bring a cargo of bread-fruit from Tahiti, but the savage on-board conditions imposed by Captain Bligh trigger a mutiny led by first officer Fletcher Christian.
I certainly can't complain about the look of this movie. This high-quality big-budget epic production was shot in wide-screen format in and near Tahiti, a beautiful corner of the world. It really takes you there and that is great. The acting and the script, however, are a little less great. Marlon Brando's curious take on Fletcher Christian as somewhat of a foppish poseur takes a little getting used to. However, he does portray him as a good man, thus endearing his character to the audience. The main flaw of this movie is baked into the story itself. The historical events don't lend themselves well to a Hollywood script. This particular version plays loose with the facts and still falls short of a satisfying conclusion. American audiences love to see someone "win", but this just isn't that kind of story. Nevertheless, the classic and historic tale of the mutiny aboard the Bounty does have a certain intrinsic allure that makes it's dramatization watchable.
