He comes to know the soldiers and finds much human interest material for his readers back in the States. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with The Film Foundation in 2000.

Well-constructed scenes bring home the hardship of war for those on the front line. The film has more mud and grime than action, but it works. Burgess Meredith was well cast as Ernie Pyle, and the actual clip at the end proves it.
