I’m gonna try and confine my review to just this episode.
Ass Blasters are back. The idea of the series, when first conceived by Tremors writers Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, was to expand on the lore of the first film much in the same way they did with the first two sequels adding Shriekers and Ass Blasters. With the show they started adding other anomalies. The reason I chose episode 4, Blast From The Past, is because the episode is smart, shows Burt in many fun ways while giving the supporting cast a lot of fun moments. Burt is teaching a survival class to capitalize on his notary after the events of the previous movies. It’s his first ever weekend class with some city folk. There’s some fun moments in that. When a hang glider gets eating by up to that point unknown ass blaster in the area the story kicks in. Burt takes Jack’s (from part 3) replacement character to hunt the ass blaster while Chang’s market sees the class attendees taught by the female cast. Gladise Jimenez really stands out in these moments…and not just because of the prolonged wet t shirt scenes, but totally not gratuitous (haha). That part was just bonus. She was genuinely fun as the tough as nails former Vegas showgirl who really knows how to scrap.
Keep in mind that this was a low budget episode of a show Universal didn’t understand and aired with some confusion since it was out of order. Somehow the special effects look better than some of the later movies. But don’t get me started on the whole practical effects vs. CGI. Just one thing I will say - CGI is meant to aid a film or show, not take place of creativity. Nuff said.
