“Idol of the Crowds” is a John Wayne sports melodrama set against the backdrop of professional hockey, an odd fit for the Duke. The film tries to layer in themes of integrity and personal sacrifice, but the inclusion of a mysterious kid subplot feels out of place and underdeveloped. Despite its earnest tone, it’s a well-meaning but ultimately forgettable B-movie, more notable for Wayne’s casting than for anything it brings to the ice.
