Holy exposition Batman. Look, I love mission impossible. And this is not a bad movie. But I think it suffered from a few things that made my first viewing of it a bit tainted.
For me, to go out with a bang, you’d think you’d start off with a large action sequence to get you hooked into the story and right into the action. Nope. The first hour felt like two. And this is also partly due to the really over complicated plot. I felt like the whole film they added another complexity or another caveat to their plan just to make the film longer or “harder” for their heroes. For me, I was a little lost at times.
On top of that, there were certainly some campier moments in this film that I wasn’t expecting. I’m definitely more of a fan of the intense Mission Impossible’s, like MI3.
All this to say, the end of the 2nd act and the 3rd act were so fun. The submarine and plane sequences were unreal in IMAX. It’s genuinely bonkers what Tom Cruise puts himself through all for cinema. The second half of the film to me, felt like the real mission impossible. The first half did not and although all that setup is necessary for the plot, it just dragged my experience down a bit too much.
I know 3 stars seems harsh, but believe me this is not a horrible movie, it’s definitely very fun. I did enjoy it overall, but it’s not the most memorable in the series unfortunately and I think it kind of got in its own way sometimes. 3/5.
