An off-beat comedy that revels in the uncomfortable. I originally rated this 2.5/5 after initial viewing but have come to better appreciate what's been done here, in no small part thanks to the absolutely abysmal American remake that underscores this original by way of doing everything so horribly wrong. Camping can be an incredibly uncomfortable watch, but unpleasant people are rarely a source of joy in our day to day life. We watched it after my partner and I's bafflement at the star studded remake that guts all the experimental humor and replaces them with saccharine drivel, to the extent that by the time we got to the last few episodes the narratives had diverged so much it was like experiencing a rift in the space-time continuum. You would be forgiven for assuming the US remake was shot for shot if you watched the first couple episodes, and that's because it is--until it decides to defang the original as a whole to deliver the safest narrative imaginable from the ruined carcass of the fell beast you see before you. This show compared to its american remake has been largely forgotten, but that only allows it to stalk into your home unbidden, harmless. If Camping (US) wants you happy and complacent, Camping (UK) means you harm. You will never forget it.
