Sarah Mathews (Whoopi Goldberg) er en sort kvinde, der bor alene efter sin mands død mange år tidligere. Hun er mor til den smukke Zora (Nia Long), der ved et tilfælde opdager, at hun er resultatet af kunstig befrugtning. Zora sætter sig for at finde donoren og bliver meget overrasket, da det viser sig, at hendes biologiske far er en hvid, brovtende bilsælger ved navn Halbert 'Hal' Jackson (Ted Danson).

Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson with a young-ish Will Smith star in this move about a mum and daughter relationship that encounters the sperm donor/father of the daughter entering their lives by accident after it emerges from a high school science blood test the type of blood the daughter has doesn't match up with her mother and passed original father , it comes to light she was born from a donor and she tracks him down...and he was not what either expected him to be. The movie rides along through the building of relationships and friendships between all parties, with some funny moments .. Not all that often mind you, I didn't watch this film and laugh out but twice only. It's a nice film, enjoyable to watch and a good solid story .. Whoopi is as always on top form here...just lacks that more original comic touch..enjoyed it greatly, I watched it again after many years
