Don't believe the gatekeeping haters.
People have raged about every Star Trek series not being "Star Trek" enough. Even Next Gen had "fans" crying about how it ruined Roddenbery's creation.
The truth is, this is Star Trek in every way.
It challenges our current social assumptions and gets us to imagine a more idealised, futuristic society.
It involves a new form of technology that seems like it's more fantasy than science.
It has characters existing and performing actions that challenge and offend conservative ideals - just as Kirk did when he had the first multi-racial kiss on television.
And it does all this while up-lifiting the politics and intrigue of the story to meet modern standards.
