i hate to say it but i genuinely loved a netflix original film. it’s crazy what can happen when they decide to let artists actually do what they want and simply create.
the animation is phenomenal and the humor really landed for me, and good GOD the songs are so catchy. i’m a retired kpop stan, from back when the wonder girls and bigbang were blowing up, and it’s wild to see how the industry has evolved in the past two decades. i feel like this did a wonderful job exploring idol culture through a whimsical and idealized lens, and the main characters (all the members of huntrix and jinu) feel well realized as people; all four of these characters fit a specific stereotype or niche without feeling bound to them or restricted, and both they and the side characters all bounce off each other really well.
it doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to themes of repressing feelings of insecurity or guilt or shame - and how that negatively affects the people and environments around us - but it goes about the storytelling with so much flair that i couldn’t help but be swept up in the earnestness and beauty of it all. i’m absolutely jamming to this soundtrack later.
