Prepare to be surprised by the warmth, depth and comic genius of this film with an outstanding must see comedic performance from Alan Rickmann with his impeccable timing and iconic dry delivery. Beginning from a cheesy star trek wannabe tv show series that is appalling in its banality and lack of originality, the flawed and disfunctional actors are recruited by a high technology but socially inept alien race to save their planet from ugly nasty bullies. In the process they rediscover themselves and overcome their failings to become unlikely heroes. I've been rewatching this film for years. My initial viewing had zero expectations but blew me away with its combination of quirky science fiction, terrific actors, taking the p!$$ out of zany science fiction story lines, and warm interactions between the flawed characters. At the time it was a small release, and did not garner much attention, but over the years has been seeing a groundswell of cult following and expanding audience. I rewatch this movie at least once a year, and I always find myself with a smile on my face, warmth in my heart, and my spirits lifted. Classic.
