An Ivy League drop-out travels to the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk. Based on the highly acclaimed novel by John Williams.
I actually loved this. It has a very simple narrative and solid performances. I was half expecting another unhinged Nic Cage performance, but he was much more subdued here, which was welcome. The majestic scenery of the early American West was beautifully captured on the big screen. I kind of expect that most people won’t be that impressed by this film. But Butcher’s Crossing actually has a very clear environmentalist/conservationist message and I was really kind of taken in by the beauty and simplicity of this approach. The film and it’s message really resonated with me, long after the credits rolled. Personally, I think it’s worth checking out on the big screen, with the only caveat being that it may not be one for viewers that don’t enjoy depictions of animal slaughter.
