Splitting between gothic mood piece, Euro-horror dreamscape, and narrative shrug. Cross of the Devil has all the visual trappings of a spooky good time: crumbling monasteries, misty graveyards, shadowy cults, and skeletons in robes. But for all its Hammer-like style, it never comes together into something satisfying.
The plot is meandering and muddled, at times bordering on incoherent. The horror elements are present but never impactful as they drift by in a haze. I was expecting something like Tombs of the Blind Dead but Cross of the Devil is a talky period piece of slog.
