This had the makings of a first-rate thriller and kept the suspense going until the end, when it descended into a B-grade horror film complete with a glowing-eyed satan and gallons of gratuitous gore. Oceans of it, in fact. Great potential for a great film squandered. Such a pity.
I will admit, though, that Mickey Rourke was excellent and was probably the best thing about the film, while Robert de Nero's Lucifer was a bit over the top. The long, girly fingernails were totally unnecessary and looked absurd. Who ever heard of the devil having immaculately manicured hands? A dumb touch that added nothing and was frankly laughable.
