The Prestige

The Prestige
Set in London in the 1800s, two rival magicians read each others diary containing the secrets of their magic tricks and personal life. As we go back in time when the diaries were written, both magicians become obsessed with their rival's best trick. The tricks, as shown to the audience, look the same, but neither magician can figure out how his opponent does it.

This ranks amoung the best of movies. When you are told in plain english what is going on in the movie, and yet, you know for sure it's some thing else, and then in the end, everything comes full circle and you marvel at the genius of the entire experience. What a great movie. Being a period piece and the subject matter, I always feared it was a rip off of the Houdini legend or something. But it's not. It's authentically new and clever and deeply engrossing. You can only watch it for the first time, once. So save that experience for a time when you can give it your full attention, because it's full of nuance while still being direct. It's Christopher Nolan at his best.
