The last 20 or so minutes this movie figures out what it was really supposed to be doing. The rest of the film is a tonal mess. The tangent that starts with hotel fiasco and continues all the way through to the Bill Burr holding cell scene should have been left on the editing room floor. In fact, this probably shouldn’t have been a comedy at all.  Channing Tatum does well to carry the film. His performance is actually quite good. Lulu is precious. The film is good enough to give it a watch, but I think ultimately it’s a missed opportunity. There are some deeply emotional themes on military service and sacrifice that are only briefly touched on. My grandfather was a POW and received a military funeral after his passing.  The color guard presenting the folded flag to my grandmother one of a few moment ingrained in my memory. As a result, whenever, I see presentation of the flag followed by “On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Army, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one’s honorable and faithful service.” …I’m never not moved by it. And that was no exception at the military funeral here. So while I think that hardly any of the humor works, it’s not that bad of a watch.
