When Ashley and her young daughter Sarah get caught up in a criminal enterprise that puts their lives at risk, she turns to estranged father Matt, currently living the life of a retired beach bum in the Cayman Islands.
I love Nic Cage, but this action “comedy” leaves a lot to be desired. Cage stars as a former CIA op, Matt, who has since retired to the Caymen Islands. But when his estranged granddaughter shows up on his beach with a very nebulous “hard drive” that some very nebulous “bad guys” are trying to acquire, Matt has to come out of retirement to save his family. The material is as generic as you could possibly imagine and as a result nearly every performance—Ron Perlman, Ernie Hudson, Ashley Greene, Jackie Earle Haley, and even Rick Fox (for some reason?)—can’t make this material work. It’s painfully unfunny to where I’m not really sure why you would market this as a comedy. There was maybe one moment where we got a wild Cageism reaction shot that made me halfway chuckle, but the rest of this was an insipid mess. Pass.
