When Dr. Robotnik returns with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations, Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, on a journey across the world to find the emerald first.
I just watched Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and it is an easy 5 out of 5 stars for me. This movie is exactly what a video game adaptation should be. It is fast paced packed with action and loaded with fan service that makes it even more fun to watch. If you liked the first movie this one takes everything to the next level and delivers even more of what made the original great. From the very start the movie throws you right into the action. Sonic is back trying to figure out his place in the world while still being the same energetic and fun loving hero we saw in the first film. The addition of Tails and Knuckles makes everything even better bringing in new dynamics that feel straight out of the games. The chemistry between the characters is fantastic and it makes the movie even more fun to watch. Ben Schwartz once again nails it as Sonic. His voice work captures Sonic’s confidence humor and excitement perfectly. Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails is another great choice bringing the same charm she has in the games. But the real standout is Idris Elba as Knuckles. He plays the character with a mix of strength seriousness and just the right amount of humor making Knuckles feel both intimidating and hilarious at the same time. And then there is Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik. He is even more over the top than he was in the first movie and it works perfectly. Every scene he is in is packed with ridiculous energy insane facial expressions and non stop jokes. You can tell Carrey is having a blast in this role and it makes Robotnik one of the most entertaining villains in any video game movie. The action is bigger and better this time around. The fight scenes feel like they were pulled straight from the games with high speed chases gravity defying battles and some seriously cool visuals. The CGI is impressive making Sonic Tails and Knuckles look even better than in the first film. Every action sequence is full of energy and the way Sonic moves feels exactly like how he should in live action. The humor is also on point. The movie is packed with jokes that will make both kids and longtime Sonic fans laugh. There are plenty of references to the games and some really clever moments that keep things entertaining. Unlike a lot of video game movies that try to take themselves too seriously this one knows exactly what it is and leans into the fun. Another thing this movie does well is balancing the action and comedy with some real heart. At its core this is a story about friendship teamwork and finding where you belong. Sonic’s relationships with both Tails and Knuckles bring a lot of emotional moments that help make the characters feel real. It is not just about flashy action scenes there is actually a solid story underneath it all. The pacing is great with no slow moments dragging the story down. It keeps moving forward always bringing something new to the table whether it is a cool action sequence a funny moment or a major reveal that will make Sonic fans lose their minds. This is exactly what a Sonic movie should be. It is fast fun and full of great moments. Whether you are a longtime Sonic fan or just looking for a great action packed family movie this one delivers. I loved every minute of it and I cannot wait to see what they do next.
