“Ride Him, Cowboy” is an early John Wayne Western where he saves a wild horse named Duke, the same horse (and name) that would stick with him through later films. The story is typical B-Western fare: a lone drifter rides into town, takes on the local villain, and finds romance along the way. While the plot is nothing new, it offers a glimpse into the building blocks of Wayne’s screen persona. For fans of his early work, it’s a worthwhile detour.
