Emotionally ambitious, Boys in the Trees sets out to blend coming of age drama with fantasy. Not at all what I anticipated going in. While the production and atmosphere are striking, the pacing can feel sluggish, with some scenes lingering too long on heavy-handed symbolism.
The exploration of themes like friendship, regret, and growing up is relatable. However, the narrative sometimes feels like it’s trying too hard to be profound, losing focus in its attempts to juggle so many emotional beats.
