Tom Laughlin makes some bold choices in making this film, such as the use of non-actors and opting for improvisation in some scenes. The resulting roughness gives the movie a certain non-Hollywood realness, as though you are simply an observant bystander and witness to systemic prejudice and one man's violent crusade against racial injustice and the rigged system that enables it.
It's far more than a "hippie" movie. I was an impressionable teenager when I first saw this film and it left an indelible mark.
