My favorite anime are those that have something to say. Evangelion, Steins;Gate, Bebop, Kenshin, TTGL - great characters, writing, settings, and stories that make you think and perhaps approach life just a little differently.
For me, Frieren does this extremely well. It's a simple message, but told masterfully through the experiences of a long-lived, stubborn aloof elf and her current compatriots in a fleshed-out fantasy world. The setting still manages to be unique and interesting, even when considered alongside many others in a now-oversaturated isekai lineup. As someone that dislikes spoilers, I won't say much more other than you cannot go wrong with giving this one a watch. Go in blind if you can.
Easily one of the top anime of 2023 and an easy recommendation even for non-anime fans.
