Powerful English Civil War drama. England, 1640. King Charles I is becoming increasingly unpopular amongst his people, seizing lands, raising taxes, ignoring Parliament and generally acting with unbridled power. After a series of heinous acts by the King a parliamentarian, Oliver Cromwell, is determined to curb the King’s power. A powerful drama that not only details the origins, events and aftermath of the English Civil War but examines the origins and intentions of democracy. The history itself, especially the military aspect, is a bit stylised and some liberties taken with the details but the themes are highly relevant and accurate. The battles may be a bit suspect in terms of accuracy but they are quite spectacular. Great, rollicking action scenes, epic in scale and appearance. Richard Harris is excellent as Cromwell, dominating the film with his presence. An incredibly powerful, riveting performance. Alec Guinness is equally great as King Charles I. Great film.
