I would consider Altered Carbon to be a staple of the cyberpunk genre, and possibly one of the easiest segues into the genre. Set in the future, Altered Carbon follows the story of Takeshi Kovacs, an almost superhuman mercenary, as he is released from prison, essentially a slave to a very rich man. Takeshi's unique set of experiences and skills guide him through the investigation he is tasked with, revealing life altering truths from his past. Both leads, Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie(Season 2) help bring the idea of an "envoy" to life.
