Spinal Tap 2 feels like an unnecessary encore to a classic that didn’t need a follow up. While the original managed to capture lightning in a bottle with its razor sharp satire and endlessly quotable gags, the sequel comes across as a middle of the road effort with fewer jokes and much less bite. It never quite recaptures the spontaneous absurdity that made the band legendary, leaving it feeling more like a safe reunion special than a must see comedy.
