In combination with the first part of the story (The Emigrants, 1971) you have an intense, not for the faint of heart 7 hour epic but it completely earns that running time's length.
You really feel every success and failure deeply and both are excited and fearful of the future.
The performances are exquisite (although I watched with subs and do not understand Swedish) and the direction is has a realistic foundation that is not scared to branch out and diversify as the narrative demands.
If ever there was a film that felt like a 'page-turner' this was it.
It really was great.
