I love the Mortal Kombat video game series and the original film hold a special place in my heart. However, this 2021 remake tries really too hard to be dark and gritty and doesn’t know how to have fun. The film also suffers from spending waaaay too much time trying establish a new character, Cole Young, who is bland and doesn’t really do much for the story. Also, where is the tournament?!? The entire film builds up to the tournament only to make us wait for it in a sequel? The fight scenes are overall decent but in a world where we have movie like “The Raid” I expect more from a live action MK film. A lot more.
